LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — The minute you drive into this quaint village nestled in the Adirondack Mountains, you get the sense that the Winter Olympics have not been forgotten. For the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, United States, a total of seven sports venues were used. All five of the venues used for the Winter Olympics were also used at the Winter Games with adjustments. These adjustments included electronic scoreboards, increased refrigeration, and the addition of a separate luge track.

Lake Placid is one of the few cities that have hosted two Olympics, and this February is the 40th anniversary of the games. The Lake Placid Winter Olympics was a special event, resulting in stories passed down through generations. Get this from a library! XIII Olympic Winter Games: Lake Placid, New York, Feb. , [United States Postal Service.;].

Legendary hockey journalist John Gilbert covered those Olympics, and went on to write the excellent Herb Brooks: The Inside Story of a Hockey Mastermind. He is back with a new book, Miracle in Lake Placid: The Greatest Hockey Story Ever Told, and in it you get to read some fantastic stories from behind the scenes of that legendary team.   In a few months when the PyeongChang Winter Olympics open, a surprising number of U.S. athletes will be from the Lake Placid area, from biathletes and skiers to bobsledders and lugers. With an Olympic Training Center and over years of winter sports competition, the tiny village positively oozes Olympic spirit.
